Chapter 14: News Releases, Media Alerts, and Pitch Letters

A news release is like a news story.

-the lead paragraph is and integral and important part of the text. It forms the apex of the journalistic  “Inverted Pyramid” approach to writing.

-the format of a traditional news release is 8.5-by-11, double-spaced.

– email and internet news releases are formatted differently.

Mat Release

– originally called “mat” because they were sent in mat form ready for printing press.

Media Kit

-also called a press kit

– usually prepared for major events and new product launches.

– purpose to give editors and reporters a variety of information and resources that make it easier for the reporter to write about the topic.
